Attach Hardiebacker cement board to the top and sides of the frame. Hardiebacker is a water and mold resistant cement backing board which is perfect for outdoor use.
Each square is adhered to the hardiebacker with mortar. Then we miter cut the corners of the molding and used mortar them in place.
Start by choosing tile for the project. Then measure the tiles and the size of the boarder tile to find out size of square. We made a frame out of pressure treated 2x4s. We cut the 2x4s down so the height would allow for one form of small mosaic tiles.

By removing every other square and replacing it with a contrasting color its easy to make up a chess or checkers board design. You need eight squares in each row. The tiles used in this project had 6 squares per row. We needed a total of three tiles to make up the board and tile the sides.
